Spring 2012 Citizen’s Police Academy Classes Forming

Have you ever wondered what takes place in a Police Department?
Are you looking for a way to give back to your community?
The Park Ridge Police Department is now accepting applications for enrollment in the upcoming City of Park Ridge Citizen’s Police Academy spring class.

The intent of the Citizen’s Police Academy is not to train citizens to become police officers. Rather, it is an opportunity to see first hand what types of duties and responsibilities police officers and other police employees have.

Learn about the justice system, patrol procedures, criminal investigations, narcotics, firearms, defensive tactics, hostage negotiations, crime scene investigations, gangs, dispatch, emergency vehicle operations, neighborhood oriented policing, go on a ride-a-long with the officers on patrol and much more!

The classes will begin on Thursday, March 15, 2012 and will continue for ten weeks through May 24, 2012, Graduation Day. The Citizen’s Police Academy will be every Thursday night from 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm throughout the ten-week period.

Qualifications for the Park Ridge Citizen’s Police Academy are as follows:

21 years of age.
Live or work in Park Ridge.
Applicants will pass a simple background check, and have no felony convictions.

Applications are due no later than February, 23rd, 2012. You will be notified in writing as to whether you have been accepted, denied, or placed on a waiting list for enrollment in the next class. If you have any questions, please contact Lt. D. Mellema or Officer J. Genualdi .

Book Sale at the Library on 1/29

The Friends of the Park Ridge Public Library will be holding a sale of Children’s books and Art books on Sunday, January 29 from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Park Ridge Library, 20 S. Prospect.

Looking for something to do on a cold day? We have thousands of gently-used children’s books and fine quality art books to browse through!

Electronics Recyling Event set for April 21, 2012

The City of Park Ridge, Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Park Ridge Park District will host a one day collection for the recycling of electronics on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Public Works Service Center, 400 Busse Highway.

There will be a fee of $5 per car, however the Chamber of Commerce will distribute a $5 coupon good towards a $20 purchase at participating Chamber members.

Only the following items will be accepted:
Cell phones
All computer related-related equipment
TV’s and audio/visual equipment
Video game consoles
PDA’s, MP3 players and radios
DVD players and VCR’s
Fax machines
Household batteries
Baby monitors
Hair dryers
Toasters, food processors and blenders
The following items will not be accepted:
Hazardous Waste
Air conditioners and fans
Refrigerators
Microwaves ovens and stoves
Car or acid filled batteries
Washing machines and dryers
Please do not bring hazardous waste or other unlisted materials.

Tree recycling and holiday trash collection schedule

Refuse and recycling collection will be delayed one day the weeks of December 26 and January 2, due to the holidays.

The recycling of Christmas trees for mulch will be the week of January 9, 2012 on your regularly scheduled refuse collection day. Only Christmas trees will be chipped, no other brush will be collected. Wreaths and garland with wire cannot be chipped and should be placed in the refuse cart.

Please place the trees curbside the night before your regular refuse collection day. Trees should be free of any stands, bags, decorations, lights and garland.

Christmas trees placed out at other times should be placed next to your refuse cart, in the alley if applicable. ARC Disposal will collect these trees as refuse. Again, no other brush will be collected.

Fire Department Key Box Program

Did you know?
The Park Ridge Fire Department has a key box program that will allow you to secure your buildings keys, and yet provide access for the fire department in case of emergency. Key boxes may be purchased at Anderson Lock in Des Plaines at (847) 824-2800. You must specify that you need a Supra box keyed for the Park Ridge Fire Department. These are very useful for elderly or disabled people who may have difficulty getting to the door in an emergency.

Recycle Holiday Lights

The City of Park Ridge is offering a holiday light recycling program where all holiday string lights and extension cords can be dropped off at the Public Works Service Center for safe disposal. The program runs now through January 31, 2012, Monday through Friday from 7am-4pm. The Service Center is located at 400 Busse Highway in Park Ridge.

Save the Iannelli Studios

Alfonso Iannelli lived and worked in Park Ridge from 1919 until his death in 1965. His work spanned a spectrum of genres and his studio, located at Elm and Norhtwest Highway, attracted many artists and help transform Chicago into the nation’s leading art center during the early half of the 20th century.

In order to preserve Iannelli’s studio the Kalo Foundation is leading a campaign to restore the property.

Battery Recycling Program

The City of Park Ridge has begun collecting rechargeable and alkaline batteries from residents for recycling. The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) recently partnered with Interstate Batteries to provide the recycling to SWANCC communities.

Batteries may be dropped off at the Park Ridge Public Works Service Center, 400 Busse Highway, Monday thru Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Batteries being accepted are:

Alkaline: AA, AAA, C, D and 9V
Rechargeable: NiCd, NiMh, lithium ion, lithium polymer – Before dropping off rechargeable batteries, residents need to tape the contact points on each battery or place in an individual self-locking plastic bag to avoid sparks.
